Nebuchadnezzar was a powerful ruler in his time and he wins many victories in the area. The Babylonian empire was established and Judah was overrun by his forces (as foretold). “The whole Babylonian army under the commander of the imperial guard broke down the walls around Jerusalem” (2 Kings 25:10). Those who remained were carried into exile, except the poorest who remained to “work the vineyards and fields” (25:12). “So Judah went into captivity, away from her land” (25:21b).
From the NIV Study Bible notes, “The book of Kings ends on a hopeful note. The judgment of exile will not destroy the people of Israel or the line of David. God’s promise concerning David’s house remains.” Indeed, we come to the end of the kings with a sliver of hope…something to hang onto.
The stage is set for us to listen to the words of the prophets as we continue these readings. All this narrative helps us appreciate the timing of Jesus’ entry into our history and gives us a rich perspective on the people he initially addresses in the New Testament. May we learn from these passages and become stronger in our faith as we watch God work through those who remain faithful to him during these darkest times!
