  1. The NIV Study Bible notes that “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it” (22:6) is NOT a prophecy or promise…just a proverb. *sigh*

“Do not gloat when your enemy falls…” (24:17) reminds me of Jesus’ words to “Love your enemies” and “pray for those that persecute you” (Matt 5:44). War is such an ugly thing. Anyone who has actually been around war will tell you there is nothing to boast about, that simply makes no sense. However, evil does exist and there are times when it must be confronted. In my military experience, the chaplain was always present to offer prayers before deployments, before battles, before plans. I don’t know what it’s like today, only that we fought battles not based on pride, but with the strategic attempt to defeat evil. The current gaming environment essentially teaches the opposite of this proverb, the images or great victories, achieving levels. The contrast between game and real life must be shocking to our young soldiers who learn this lesson face-to-face. Pray for our young soldiers, sailors and airmen as well as their leaders. Their’s is a difficult road, a burdensome path made all the more difficult by society as they are mocked for believing in God.
