1. As “the church” we have the distinction of being known for our judgmental attitudes. In many respects we have earned this privilege through arrogance and holier-than-thou types of attitudes. This is part of the movement away from denominational churches, an attempt at least, to disassociate ourselves from the “judgmental” past. Even in researching this particular topic, I found many sermons and posts that began with stark judgmental statements.    It’s an attitude of putting people down when you think they are wrong, rather than finding ways to build them up…But Jesus says: watch it. Be careful. Whether it has to do with people’s actions, or lifestyle, or children or weaknesses or sins or worship preferences. Be careful, Jesus says.Sermon prepared by Rev. Henry Kranenburg, Hamilton, Ontario

   I think we know this definition well, but the reminder is so very important as we embrace our calling to go out and make disciples of all nations. We really must recognize that without Christ, our sin is a veritable plank in our eye and we must deal with that before anything else.

   However, we must be discerning without being judgmental. Jesus is careful to rebuke us as hypocrites while providing directive guidance:

   Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.

   We’re all evangelists, whether we admit it or not. All are watching and listening to our words, actions, deeds, etc.  Lord, help me to be discerning and loving beyond my own limitations.
