Isaiah 30: Woe to the Obstinate Nation. These rebellious people only want the prophets and seers to tell them what they want to hear. How often have I fallen into this trap? “Tell us pleasant things, prophesy illusions…stop confronting us with the Holy One of Israel!” (30:10-11). Lord I hope and pray that I would be willing to hear the truth and act faithfully, that I would be willing to speak the truth and follow through. Your assurance is often repeated in Isaiah’s words, “Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; therefore he will rise up to show you compassion.” (30:18). Praise God indeed!
Isaiah 31: Woe to Those Who Rely on Egypt. The Assyrians taunt Hezekiah (2 Kings 18:17-37) using words of intimidation with reference to their reliance on Egypt. I don’t know that they heard the words of Isaiah, but they scoffed at Hezekiah’s response and faithfulness to the Lord (see Isaiah 36 & 37). Ultimately Sennecherib (and 185,000 Assyrians) learned the fatal lesson for mocking the Lord. The main point here is to rely on God alone, not outside sources, for redemption. Go to God first!
Isaiah 32: The Kingdom of Righteousness and Complacent Women Warned. As part of the impending invasion by the Assyrians, Isaiah warns the women and daughters against complacency. “Tremble, you complacent women; shudder, you daughters who feel secure!” (32:11). The warning is followed by assurance that “my people will live in peaceful dwelling places, in secure homes, in undisturbed places of rest.” (32:18). It’s so nice to have such positive assurances to balance out the dark times that are looming. I find comfort in knowing God’s grace will constantly be there for us!
