The interaction between God and Moses is very interesting in this reading. All the more interesting as Moses is the inspired author of the book of Exodus. His perspective on the events, especially his reluctance to accept God’s direction is comforting in an odd way.
– In 3:4, God call Moses from the burning bush and Moses answers “Here I am.” When God reveals himself, Moses tries to hide (3:6).
– God ignores Moses and says, “I am sending you to Pharaoh…” (3:10).
Back and forth we see the dialogue. Moses says, “Who am I” (3:11), God says, “I will be with you” (3:12).
– In 3:13, Moses needs more clarification so God says, “I am who I am” and further explains the entire plan.
– Again Moses argues, “What if they do not believe me…?” (4:1) and God provides an answer through various signs.
– Verse 4:10, “Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent…” and God responds, “I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.”
– Moses responds, “Please send someone else” (4:13). Seriously? God gets angry and tells Moses to have Aaron speak for him.
How many times have I ignored God’s call? His direction? How many excuses have I offered? Thank you Lord for your infinite patience with me. Forgive me for my excuses, my rationale and my narrow-minded perspective. Use me in whatever ways best serve your purpose in the days I get to wander on earth.
