Jesus is pretty clear in this teaching: Do not worry, do not be anxious about your life.
The command not to worry is not unique to Christians, but the rest of the story provides insight into Jesus’ teaching that goes helps us appreciate why we should not worry, why we must not be anxious. Simply put, God will surely take care of us, he will provide what we need to eat and wear. Not by sitting on our hands and dreaming about it, but by consistently working in his will. I’m not advocating fatalism, this is a common misunderstanding, one that might come from a casual glance at certain scripture and I don’t think this is even close to Christ’s teaching here. The simple clarification is this:
If we seek his kingdom first our hearts will be in the right place, or at least be oriented in the right direction. As we read and study scripture each day, our minds are being transformed to that of Christ–we will seek his kingdom and righteousness. From this perspective we have a much better chance at fulfilling the great commission.
Further, this is not some naive saying, for Jesus is completely aware of the troubles in this world, the world will have problems of its own. The point is simple: don’t buy into the worries of the world!
Lord help us to “seek first” those things that are kingdom oriented, that which honors you. Help us to do this without looking for earthly rewards. Thank you in advance for taking care of us the way you always do.
