  1. “I will spare them no longer,” says the Lord (Amos 8:2). How sad. Worse yet, the Lord declares he will send a famine of the worst kind, “not a famine of food or a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the Lord” (8:11). Makes me think of this country, how we are removing God from our schools, courthouses and every corner of society. Fast forward a few generations and we too will have a famine of these proportions. Even now, an entire generation is raised in this country without knowledge of the Lord. We’ve heard recent testimonies from people who didn’t know Easter had anything to do with Christianity…really? Indeed.

No one will be spared the wrath of God for such insolence. “though they dig down to the depths below, from there my hand will take them” (9:2). “Yet I will not totally destroy the descendants of Jacob,” declares the Lord…there will be a remnant, some will remain.

This is an important hint of hope. In Frank Peretti’s first books, “This Present Darkness” and “Piercing the Darkness” (1986 & 1989), I was intrigued by the waking of the remnant. This was the hope Peretti was offering back in the 80s, approaching 30 years ago.

Lord I hope the remnant is still alive and well. Let me be part of those who follow you, who pray fervently and who seek not only to drink from your Word, but do well with that knowledge to lead others to your eternal well. I look forward to the day when “they may possess the remnant of Edom,” (9:12), when your name will be glorified above all others.
