We come now to the conclusion of the Sermon on the Mount, primarily recorded in Matthew’s gospel. So many thoughts race through my mind as I reflect on the lessons contained here, but most significantly I’m in awe of Jesus Christ, his teaching, his earnest desire to sit among mere people and speak into our lives.
When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.
I’m one of those in the crowds, amazed at his teaching. Words that transcend time, Jesus sets the bar high for us to follow. Look back at the intro. No less than 20 topics are covered in a matter of a few pages in the Bible. While I appreciate the desire of those who want to read through the Bible quickly, I find it much more insightful to carefully consider each passage. Perhaps I need to do both. I hope I’m always willing to learn!
Jesus’ teaching was and is above and beyond the things that trap us, that demand our attention and drive us to distraction. As our nation spins out of control with self-seeking happiness, the Bible is consistent. We need to learn from these examples and keep a Godly perspective on the vapor we call life. The war for eternity is far more important than any single battle, but each battle is important, every casualty counts.
Lord help me to learn this sermon from the inside out and outside in. To completely comprehend your words and live them out accordingly.
