Psalm 18 (basically 2 Samuel 22) is a psalm of David where he gives God all the honor and glory. God delivers David from his enemies: “He parted the heavens and came down” (18:9), “He shot his arrows and scattered the enemy” (18:14) and “the Lord was my support” (18:18).
Although David committed great sins, he was forgiven for his repentant heart. Here he includes, “I have been blameless before him and have kept myself from sin” (18:22). It might seem like he is boasting, but the tone of his words, the way he continually points to the Lord as “the Rock” supports the theme well: God rewards righteousness. The Lord will rescue. “You have delivered me from the attacks of the people…people I did not know now serve me” (18:43).
“The Lord lives! Praise be to my Rock! Exalted be God my Savior! He is the God who avenges me” (18:46-47). This is a song of great praise and God gets all the glory, “He gives his king great victories; he shows unfailing love to his anointed, to David and to his descendants forever.”
