Martha is working way too hard! Excessive preparations can lead to misplace priorities. The tension in this short passage is something to consider as we evaluate why we work at whatever we do.

I’m reflecting on this passage after a long week of work on many projects, all of which seem to have great value…at least in my mind! It would be dangerous to interpret the words of Jesus as, “Don’t worry, be happy.” When I’m tired, that’s what I’d prefer to hear, but that’s not really the story here is it?
Martha is making a fuss over dinner, some elaborate meal preparations, when the time together is more important. Jesus doesn’t belittle her preparations…too much…but he does point out something Martha can’t seem to grasp:

Prioritizing projects is a difficult task when there is so much to be done. Lord, please tell me clearly “what is better” so I don’t go down some path that just consumes time and energy.
