The remaining three chapters of 1 Chronicles represent various details about David’s final preparations before he dies.
Chapter 27 includes those serving in the Army, the leaders of the tribes and the King’s overseers. Interesting to note that the Third Army was led by “Benaiah son of Jehoiada the priest” (27:5). Even a priest’s son can command in the military. Nice! The details of the organization that ran David’s kingdom are impressive, a very large contingent of overseers was required to cover the vast operations. Most interesting that God would choose to include these in the Bible. Names mentioned but once, yet their lives and responsibility must have been quite honorable indeed.
Chapter 28 summarizes the plans for building the temple, with an emphasis on Solomon being God’s chosen for succession. David drew the plans, but Solomon implemented the work (28:11-19), “‘All this,’ David said, ‘I have in writing as a result of the Lord’s hand on me, and he enabled me to understand all the details of the plan'” (28:19). The details would have been quite extensive, as anyone who has ever completed a construction project knows.
In Chapter 29, David assembles the leaders and announces Solomon as the chosen one of God. He entreats the assembly to do the work for his “inexperienced” son because “the task is great,” yet it is a task “for the Lord God” (29:1), not for men. David goes out of his way to honor God in all he’s doing here.
What great joy comes to those who so willingly give to God. Lord, increase my desire to give willingly, keep me focused on your will for me and my family as trials of this world are ever present. David died “at a good old age, having enjoyed long life, wealth and honor” (29:28). May it be so for your servants today.
