  1. The context of this statement is quite interesting. His mother and brothers, in the earthly sense, were not inside with Jesus, rather they were outside. Some suggest they travel 30 miles to collect their kin, to protect him, to help him out — clearly he was getting a bit too carried away with this preaching stuff. They stood outside waiting for a discrete moment to whisper to him and draw him away. Surely Mary believed, but the others were yet to be convinced that Jesus was the Messiah. From their perspective, the boy that grew up in their house, couldn’t be anything more than their brother. They weren’t listening to him because they “knew” him. Really? James, we know, goes through a transformation and becomes a strong advocate for Christ after his death and resurrection.

Jesus is not being dismissive as much as he is inviting all to join his eternal family.  From Matthew, Mark and Luke:

    • For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.
    • Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother
    • My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice.

We have been invited into adoption into the family of Christ, the eternal family of God. This moral flesh we walk around in will come to an end soon enough. The Almighty Creator invites us to his family by simply believing in Christ, confessing our sins and by calling Jesus our Lord and savior. Perhaps that’s too simple for these modern times, but I believe Jesus’ words transcend time.

Come be a brother or sister in Christ!
