Paul’s assurance that “the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one” (2 Thessalonians 3:3) gives us great peace, especially since Paul reminds us that we must not be idle! So much so, that those who are unwilling to work are shunned, “they are not busy; they are busybodies” (3:11), so: “do not associate with them, in order that they may feel ashamed” (3:14). Still, Paul wants them to be part of the chosen if they would be willing, “do not regard them as an enemy, but warn them as you would a fellow believer” (3:15). Those who disregard Paul’s teaching are not part of the family, but they could be if they would learn his teaching. This is a difficult text when taken out of context or cherry-picked to support ostracizing some from the fellowship we enjoy. Lord, help me to be careful and discerning when choosing to disassociate others. Do not let me be idle and do not let me become a busybody!! Instead, lead me where you are calling and help me to draw others to Christ.
