Chapter 3 sounds like a disturbing dream…not a nightmare, but something that woke the person up in the middle of the night in a confused state. He is found and they embrace, then again we see the reminder, “Do not arouse or awaken love until it so desires” (3:5) and we’ll see it again in 8:4: be patient in love.
I still chuckle when I read 4:2 (thanks to a sermon I heard years ago), “Your teeth are like a flock of sheep just shorn, coming up from the washing, each has its twin…” Men, try saying that to your wife! Better yet, include that in your wedding vows. (Sorry…it just makes me smile).
Verse 7 works: “You are altogether beautiful, my darling; there is no flaw in you” and “you have stolen my heart, my sister, my bride; you have stolen my heart” (4:9). There reference to “my sister” is not meant to confuse anyone here; rather, it serves as a reminder that my bride is also a sister in the Lord.
I am indeed blessed with a beautiful wife of over 25 years, praise God for his favor!
