Let the Word evoke words. May your life encourage lives.
Micah speaks out strongly against the priests and prophets who are seeking personal gain, “her priests teach for a price, and her prophets tell fortunes for money” (Micah 3:11). Micah, however, was “filled with power, with the Spirit of the Lord, and with justice and might, to declare to Jacob his transgression, to Israel his son” (3:8).
Micah then jumps to the end of time, “In the last days…” (4:1) “…Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore” (4:3). “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel” (5:2). What a glorious day that will be!
The words of Micah in 5:5-15, especially vv10-15, provide a picture of a great strength in which the Lord vanquishes all iniquities, “I will destroy your witchcraft…your idols…demolish your cities…take vengeance…” Perhaps this is what the people were looking for when Jesus came and preached among them. Perhaps we long for this time when God will “clean house” and remove all the wicked people. Many times I long for this day, but not yet Lord, please not yet. Many have yet to understand your ways, even those in my own family. Help me to witness to those around me and show them your ways before your “take vengeance in anger and wrath” (5:15). Make this my burning desire, to seek those who are lost; to seek, not to judge. I don’t know how you will do this through your humble servant, but I pray that you will show me the way.
