It is fitting that June 8th, as we drive to Mexico to offer a hand to orphans and those in need that we read this particular chapter in Isaiah. “If you do away with the yoke of oppression…and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.” (Isaiah 58:9-10). This chapter has several “if you…” statements that culminate in this amazing promise: “then you will find your joy in the Lord, and I will cause you to ride in triumph on the heights of the land and to feast on the inheritance of your father Jacob” (58:14).
Our fasting on this trip is a fast from the modern conveniences of our society, the comfort of what we refer to as home. It’s easy to forget our time on earth is but a drop in the bucket of eternity. Lord help us as we fast from luxuries, help us to truly focus on what you have called us to do this week, help us to choose the kind of fasting that is pleasing in your sight. Amen.
