Hebrews 8 starts out with a foot-stomper, like any good teacher who wants to make sure the students are taking notes (this will surely be on the test!!): “Now the main point of what we are saying is this” (Hebrews 8:1). Pay attention, here comes the payload! Once explained, the writer of Hebrews concludes: “By calling this covenant “new,” he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and outdated will soon disappear” (8:13). There are the bookends for this morning’s reading:
The main point is this, God provided a new and better covenant through Jesus Christ, one that will not become obsolete.
One of the favorite and most often quotes from Jeremiah 31:31-34, in particular, “No longer will they teach their neighbor…because they will all know me” (Hebrews 8:11 from Jeremiah 31:34). Lord, I long for the day that all will know you and we will collectively be your people.
Thanks be to God the Father, the Perfecter, the one who continues to pursue us for our benefit. May we learn from these words.
