Let the Word evoke words. May your life encourage lives.
Paul’s second letter to the Thessalonians begins much like the first where he applauds their perseverance and faith, “because your faith is growing more and more, and the love all of you have for one another is increasing” (2 Thessalonians 1:3,4).
The main text of this chapter leads one to believe the church is under constant attack since Paul hammers home the point that God will avenge those who fight against Christ. See: “God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you and give relief to you who are troubled” (1:6-7a) and “He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus” (1:8). My initial response to hearing these words is much like being in a Southern Baptist church, except that Paul’s purpose is to comfort those who are working to keep the new church alive, not convicting the non-believer. Lord, help me to be willing to go into battle for you knowing you will be there…even if it is not visible or obvious to me and even if it’s not in my lifetime!
