Jehu almost does a great job…almost. Elisha directs one of his company of prophets to anoint Jehu as “king over Israel” (2 Kings 9:3) and instruct him to “destroy the house of Ahab” (9:7) including Jezebel’s gruesome fate (9:10 and 9:32-37). Through his great deception, he lured all the prophets of Baal into one place and had them put to death (10:18-25).
Here’s the “however” statement that is so troubling, “he did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit — the worship of the golden calves at Bethel and Dan” (10:28). “Jehu was not careful to keep the law of the Lord, the God of Israel, with all his heart” (10:31). “Surely you don’t mean me?” (Mark 14:19) comes to mind. Surely, Lord, you don’t mean I have “almost” done what you said. Surely you don’t mean I have betrayed you by not completing the task you have given me. Lord, let me know be like Jehu. Show me the err of my ways and guide me along the path of righteousness for your glory. My hope and prayer is to do your will–completely.
