Take a moment and read Acts 17:1-9 to get some interesting background for reading Paul’s letters to the Thessalonians. Thessalonica was the largest city in Macedonia and not an easy choice for evangelizing the Gospel. Paul mentions problems face when traveling through Macedonia in 1 & 2 Corinthians.
If I were picking a place to witness, Macedonia and Achaia would probably be at the bottom of the list…a tough crowd to be sure. Paul, on the other hand, is quite intentionally sent to these place for this very reason. Paul, Silas and Timothy were booted out of Thessalonica after a short visit (see Acts 17:1-9), but during that short visit many became Christians. Paul’s words are significant when he writes, “you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia. The Lord’s message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia–your faith in God has become known everywhere” (1 Thessalonians 1:7-8). Wow! Lord, I pray that these words could be said of my witness and behavior, for your glory, not mine! Please help me to live up to this calling and become a model ambassador of Christ to all.
