Watchfulness. Much will be required.

Matthew, Mark and Luke all include warnings to be watchful, to be ready at all times–for all to be on guard. In this passage, Jesus provides a parable to underscore the importance of being alert by prepared for the master’s return–any time.

From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.

Luke 12:35-48

  1. For many years the quote, “to whom much is given, much will be required” has guided my thinking. I know that I’ve been given, that God has poured his blessings on me and my family and I feel the weight of responsibility to use all that I have wisely. The Lord doesn’t ask too much, simply that I stand ready, that I remain prepared:

You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

When I reread that, it might come across as if I was under some burden, but that isn’t the case. I fully believe God gives us each the right amount of responsibility to move us forward, the appropriate weight for each of us. Without any weight we struggle to remain balanced. Think about zero gravity, how silly we would look floating around all the time. The right amount keeps us steady and productive. Some days feel heavier than others, but I remain confident and will continue to work hard to prepare for the day the Lord returns.
