The crowds have gathered again and Jesus teaches on several key concepts in these 12 verses:
- hypocrisy of the Pharisees
- fear him who has authority to throw you into hell
- good or bad news for those who publicly acknowledge or disown Jesus
- blasphemy against the Holy Spirit
- support from the Holy Spirit
That’s a lot of ground to cover! Jesus provides theological details within the context of loving God above all others while giving us a peek into the triune nature of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Each part of this passage is worthy of its own insight and deep contemplation. This morning, I’d like to focus on the first part where Jesus points out that hypocrisy will ultimately be revealed.
I’ve often told our children that lies will always be revealed either explicitly or implicitly. Often hypocrisy is exposed directly, especially with the advent of social media and the insatiable desire to prove oneself above others (not something I endorse!). Rants on Facebook or personal blogs (ok, really Facebook) often attempt to show one above the other.
Implicit revelation is much more difficult to see. It’s revealed in gradual changes in worldview (Christian and non-Christian), it might take weeks, months or years. When we attempt to hide our transgressions we sabotage our own foundation–eventually, it will erode and cause cracks to appear, some worse than others.
This is applicable to us personally, our workplace and definitely extends to our churches where it may take a long time to be revealed.
