  1. This is such an intimate song of love between man and woman with great support from friends, “we rejoice and delight in you; we will praise your love more than wine” (1:4). The complimentary exchange in 1:13-2:1 speaks of beauty beyond what the eyes see, of complete acceptance. These two are deeply in love, or at least it seems like that from my perspective of one who is blessed to have such a wife of many years.

“Do not arouse or awaken love until it so desires” (2:7) suggests such intimacy should be a natural expression of love, not something that requires external arousal. In our “modern” culture, such modesty is often forgotten and thus the greater pleasure in true intimacy is lost. Even here we are reminded to “catch for us the foxes, the little foxes that ruin the vineyards” (2:15). These “little foxes” have no doubt been the ruin of many marriages.

This is indeed the Song of Songs, the very best of the exclusive relations between husband and wife. I pray every couple would have such a deep and mutual love for each other. So often we sense this kind of love and mutual admiration at weddings, how much more at 25th wedding anniversaries! I pray God would truly blesses each couple with words like we read here, “My beloved is mine and I am his” (2:16). Amen!
