The ambassadors return and are excited that they were able to do amazing things, even the demons were frightened of them. Jesus uses this as a teachable moment and explains this is what God was pleased to do and Jesus rejoiced, full of joy. Jesus tells them:
However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.
Rejoice in that which is eternal, not gloating, complete joy. Now this is the definition of success.

Keep the focus on God.
Those who were commissioned return to provide a report to Jesus. They’re excited by the power they possess, but not for selfish reasons. To be sure they aren’t becoming intoxicated with the new-found power, Jesus reminds them to keep the focus on God.
There is great joy in preaching the message of God, joy in being used as and instrument of His will. We just need to be sure not to let that go to our heads!
As I read through this passage a few times, I’m reminded not to think too highly of myself or of whatever it is I think I’ve learned. Jesus tells them God has “hidden these things from the wise and learned” to remind us he was not pleased with Pharisees and teachers of the law. I take this as a vivid reminder not to strive for position or prestige, but to honor God in all things.
At the same time, whatever knowledge I have gained, whatever little I have learned, must be shared with others in ways that honor God. It’s no use unless it is shared. I’m worthless if I keep everything to myself. As I learn more about the Bible, about God’s truth, I’ve learned we must share his love, his hope, his promise with others. Not that I have it all right and certainly not because I have anything figured out except this one thing: Jesus is the Messiah who has lovingly poured himself out for the world. He is the hope of all and for all. He is the one and only.
These things can’t be hidden. At the same time, they shouldn’t be shoved down anyone’s throat. Somewhere between those extremes is the right message to convey.
Love God, Love People, Rejoice that your name is written in heaven.
Get excited about your future reward, but don’t hold onto it like a prize–give it away as much as possible. Love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. Love people, you neighbor, as yourself. Learn how to translate this into your life, how it should be played out naturally, organically, in your daily routine. Let this be your light to the world and the Holy Spirit will do the rest!
