One Reply to “Psalms 106-110”

  1. The last psalm of Book IV, Psalm 106 recants the sins of our ancestors framed in honor and praise to the Lord for his deliverance time and time again.

Remember me, Lord, when you show favor to your people, come to my aid when you save them, that I may enjoy the prosperity of your chosen ones, that I may share in the joy of your nation and join your inheritance in giving praise Psalm 106:4-5

The verse says “when” not “if” you show favor because God remains steadfast and loving even as we slip away into sin.

Psalm 107 – Call For Praise Of Yahweh Who Hears Cries Of Distress. Great title, the ending captures the sense of the psalm: “Let the one who is wise heed these things and ponder the loving deeds of the Lord” (107:43).

As I read through the psalms, I wonder what it would be like to read through the worship songs we sing on Sunday (or whenever) without the music in our minds, just the words. Many repeat the same concept, but in different ways when the music is applied. Lord, when I read a psalm, please help me to hear the music.

Psalm 108 – “Awake, harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn, I will praise you, Lord, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples” (108:2-3). That’s the way to start the day! Add some music to your morning and sing praises to the Lord “for great is your love, higher than the heavens” (v4). The greatest contribution of Christian radio (and internet) is the opportunity to hear great praise and worship music anytime we want. We have a choice, of course, but choose wisely, worship the Lord only!

Psalm 109. There are those surrounding and spouting words of hatred toward the writer of this psalm, but he does not fight back, rather he pleads to God for help: “Appoint someone evil to oppose my enemy; let an accuser stand at his right hand. When he is tried, let him be found guilty, and may his prayers condemn him” (109:6-7). The psalm continues with quite a list of consequences for wicked and deceitful actions…the prayer is pretty specific! “He loved to pronounce a curse–may it come back on him” (v17). The writer does not strike back with actions, only thoughts and prayers, he cries out, “Help me, Lord my God; save me according to your unfailing love” (v26). Perhaps this psalm is a cornerstone for those who choose a passive-aggressive posture. When Jesus said, “turn the other cheek,” (Matthew 5:39) was this psalm on his mind? Lord help me to keep a heavenly perspective and trust that you will judge rightly, it’s not my place to be judge and jury.

Psalm 110 – Prophecies Concerning The Messianic King-Priest. This short psalm is one of the few places in scripture that refer to Jesus as  “a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek” (v4). The words provide an affirmation that God will rule in the end, he alone will save his people. In the end, we win! We are sure of the outcome, though we do not know what the day will bring.

Great is the Lord and worthy to be praise. Start your day with music, with worship worthy of the Lord!
