  1. Friends, those we know so well, the ones we celebrate special occasions with and lean on in tough times. I don’t mean to judge Facebook, but in some ways it diminishes the concept of a friend by making the term commonplace. Friends are special, they should be carefully chosen and thoughtfully guarded.

“The righteous choose their friends carefully, but the way of the wicked leads them astray” (12:26)
“Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm” (13:20)
“A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity” (17:17)
“One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother” (18:24).

“Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay” (Ruth 1:16) provides a wonderful example of Ruth’s allegiance to Naomi and an important lesson in sticking together in the toughest of times.

As one who moves a lot, developing close friends, real friends, is somewhat difficult, but not impossible. It takes intentional effort, deliberate steps. For those that don’t move much, there’s a different kind of pressure, other considerations since you know you’ll see the same people year after year. In either case, these proverbs drive home the importance of having trustworthy friends and remind us to choose wisely. I thank God for those I call friends, true friends.
