Parable of the Mustard Seed

“The kingdom of heaven is like…” is included in several parables in this chapter of Matthew and a few more times later on in the gospel. Mark and Luke write, “kingdom of God” in some of the parables they provide for us to learn. It stuck me as interesting this morning as I read news of troubles in this world. The kingdom that we are hoping for, that we are waiting for, is not like the kingdom of this world.

Jesus provides some insight for our benefit, especially for the least of our brothers and sisters. I’m reminded of the Sermon on the Mount, “Blessed are the poor in spirit,” those who are downcast, those who don’t sense Christ in their life. These can be Christians who are depressed, injured or just beaten down by Satan to the point of exasperation. The poor in spirit are certainly those who are not part of Christ’s family, even if they don’t know it.

In both cases, Jesus reminds us that from the seemingly insignificant mustard seed a magnificent plant is born. We all have a chance, even the least, the lost and the lonely. Everyone we meet, all we come in contact with have within them the opportunity for significance in God’s kingdom.

Lord, keep me from overlooking the smallest things that could be the greatest benefit for your kingdom; your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
