Parable of the Mustard Seed and Yeast

Relentless in His pursuit to reach people, “Jesus went through the towns and villages, teaching as he made his way to Jerusalem.” His teaching on the Mustard Seed is included in Matthew, Mark and Luke while the parable of the yeast is recalled in Matthew and Luke. Shore verses with strong impact–perhaps we should consider these words carefully!

  1. I probably should have included Luke’s reference to this parable back when I looked at the passage in Matthew and Mark (post), but repetition is good for memory, so today, I will consider the impact of these words again.

Two important thoughts: 1) though the seed is small, it is wired for growth and 2) the tiny yeast changes the recipe. Both thoughts weave together great imagery that portrays the birth of Christianity from humble beginnings to an unstoppable movement.

One voice, one person, just one, can change history. We’ve seen examples of those who take a stand with such a conviction that masses flock to (both positive and negative). Jesus lets those he meets and teaches that each of us counts, everyone matters, that through individuals God will speak to the masses.

Most of the time when I read this I only think of positive things, but there is another side to the coin. The reason why I think it’s so important to read the Bible daily and ponder the text throughout the day is that we are doing spiritual warfare. Satan and his band would love to plant a mustard seed of doubt in our mind or mess with the yeast. Though small, these ingredients are significant–what about “small sin?” I’m only human and I recognize this is only possible through the sanctifying blood of Christ.

Holy Spirit move us from 99.9% to 100% belief, transform us to followers that stand strong in faith. Remove the seeds of doubt and show us how to be the yeast that contributes to the rising of Christianity in its fullest sense: completely devoted followers of Jesus.
