The teaching of righteousness or being righteous is seen throughout the Bible. Many references are made in the psalms and proverbs along with the prophets. Christ taught about righteousness in the first half of today’s reading, lofty concepts, hard lessons and the requirement for humility.
5:6, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.”
5:10, “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
5:20, “For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.”
5:45, “He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.”
6:1, “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will nave no reward from your Father in heaven.”
I know that I am not righteous, nor can I become righteous on my own. Fortunately, Paul writes on the subject often and helps me understand how I can become righteous through Christ alone: “Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin. But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.” (Romans 3:20-22).
Lord I hunger and thirst for righteousness, I hunger and thirst for you, your words, your will, your ways. These three chapters are full of teachings that must be learned over and over again. I pray for wisdom and a great desire to learn each day. Fill me with your righteousness.
