  1. Mary’s relationship to Elizabeth may not be clearly known, but it was her choice of destination following the angel’s visit and pronouncement. “When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit” (Luke 1:41).

It’s impossible for me to imagine what it must be like to carry a child in the womb. All I know is my amazing wife did this with great joy for four beautiful children. There is something distinctly special about the bond between mother and unborn child, something I’m not even going to attempt to write about, except to say this: can you imagine what it would feel like to know you were embodying (literally) the Son of God? To say that Mary was filled with great joy cannot begin to express what was happening in her young life.

My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. Luke 1:46-48

God was mindful of Mary from announcement through birth of Jesus. Just the knowledge that she was part of this entire process is quite amazing and must have felt overwhelming at times. Mary’s song continues to express her humility while honoring God for all he has done for us and will do in the years to come. In just a few verses we will fast forward 30 years when Jesus performs his first miracle at a wedding with just a hint from Mary, complete submission to Jesus.

Lord, help me to learn from this incredible humility, the wonderful example of how to serve you faithfully.
