Amid the laments of the difficult times portrayed here, we read: “Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, ‘The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.'” (Lamentations 3:21-23). I will probably never suffer the way the Israelites suffered at the hands of great oppressors, yet some days I wonder if I can repeat these verses with such resolve. We witness people in dire need, yet have great joy. The Israelites suffered because their leaders let them down. The common folk, the simple farmer, the lowest of the families were all swept away because they were misled. Such a powerful verse, a rose amid piles of ruble.
