Though reading of these ancient times is difficult, it is clear that God will not settle for second best, and we should learn from this: “You must purge the evil from among you” (Deuteronomy 17:7) and again, “you must purge the evil from Israel” (17:12). Moses provides clear guidance here on how the people are to be “blameless before the Lord your God” (18:13). As Israel grows, cities of refuge are established for those to hide when accidental deaths occur. But for the guilty who seek refuge here, “show no pity. You must purge from Israel the guilt of shedding innocent blood, so that it may go well with you” (19:13). “You must purge the evil from among you” (19:19), those who lie and give false testimony. The rebellious son, who does not obey his parents and thus violates the fifth commandment, “you must purge the evil from among you” (21:21).
Purge the Evil
In this section of Deuteronomy, Moses provides a wealth of instruction for several different circumstances. Those responsible for the good order and discipline of Israel, its judges, courts and various leaders must take their roles seriously and purge the evil from Israel. By doing this, others will see the nation and be awed by its great strength. But only if it’s done fairly, without deceit or selfless motivation.
In today’s modern society we’ve established an elaborate legal system to stand in place of personal integrity, yet we have not completely lost sight of honor and respect. At least not yet. Anyone can be sued for anything at a moment’s notice and the concept of ‘innocent until proven guilty’ becomes somewhat blurred. Still, my hope is that we will live our lives with such integrity that the courts could be filled with witnesses that bear testimony to defend us when called.
God help me to purge the evil from my heart, to love and serve you completely, without reservation and let that be a witness for Christ in this day and in this place.
