  1. Jeremiah’s prayer: “Lord, I know that people’s lives are not their own; it is not for them to direct their steps. Discipline me, Lord, but only in due measure–not in your anger, or you will reduce me to nothing” (Jeremiah 10:23-24). What great words! Discipline me, Lord, because I am your child. Do not withhold your rebuke! But not because you are angry, because you love me. Praise the Lord for such strong words.

Though the people have followed the Baals and idols, God will provide redemption, even for the wicked neighbors! “I will again have compassion and will bring each of them back to their own inheritance and their own country. And if they learn well the ways…then they will be established among my people” (12:15). Of course, there is the other side of the coin, “But if any nation does not listen, I will completely uproot and destroy it,” declares the Lord! (12:17). It’s interesting to note that God’s provision extends beyond his chosen people, especially since we get the impression the Pharisees of Jesus’ time on earth seemed bent on keeping God to themselves under the yoke of rules they created. We are called to be inclusive, but only to the point that those included turn from their idolatrous ways and follow God.
