I would not like to get in an argument with this man Isaiah. His words cut to the core even after more that 2500 years, two examples:
– “does the ax raise itself above the person who swings it, or the saw boast against the one who uses it?” (Isaiah 10:15)
– “and the remaining trees of his forests will be so few that a child could write them down” (10:19).
Ouch! Is this included in the “confrontational” style for evangelism? I hear you Isaiah, I hear you, but just in case, let me rephrase your words: God’s not happy, right? Do we hear these sharp words of rebuke today? Or have we completely watered them down? Isaiah doesn’t try to say he is better than anyone. He doesn’t say “follow me, cuz I know better.” He points to God, to the Lord Almighty. Compare yourself to God’s law, how did that look to you? Perhaps we can’t judge for ourselves, so we have these words to squelch our arrogance, our selfish pride and ambition. God I pray we hear these words anew today, clear warnings.
