The title of this section is significant for we all want to be assured of the certainty of God’s promise, for if we are truly certain, we would not stop telling people about this good news. God provides a promise to us because he loves us and there are many examples in the Old Testament that demonstrate this love. Abraham is one of these key examples that people knew about when Hebrews was written, he was someone they heard lots about in Jewish gatherings, a prominent figure. So it makes sense to refer to Abraham in this text for a solid reference. “And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised” (Hebrews 6:15). Two thoughts here: Abraham was patient and God delivered on his promise.
Abraham’s patience is something to be sought after, even when we witness his weakness (lying about his wife…twice), we know fully that he was a strong leader, one who obeyed God fully. Studying Abraham will help us understand how to be better in many ways of our lives.
Secondly, God provides an oath to confirm his promise, “two unchangeable things” (6:18), his promise and his oath to provide hope, “this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure” (6:19). We’re back to the central them of “hope” in the Bible. Lord help us to understand the hope you have given us through your word, promises and actions. Help us to learn from the Bible and translate that into action every day so those who see us will want to know more about you…and give us the knowledge to speak to each one wisely.
