The Lord speaks to Moses again and describes the last plague: “Every firstborn son in Egypt will die…” (11:5). “There will be loud wailing throughout Egypt…but among the Israelites not a dog will bark…then you will know that the Lord makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel” (11:6-8).
I’ve been in lots of storms growing up in the South, hurricanes and the tornados they spawn. There is nothing like the eye of a hurricane passing over, something I will not forget: utter silence. From crashing wind to complete silence. By the time the eye passes, power is out and all birds and animals are burrowed for safety…somehow they know it’s only a temporary calm. God spared our family through many storms growing up. Though my experience doesn’t compare with the passover, I remember the dread of tornados passing over our house and the path of destruction left around the neighborhood. The overhead photos showed clearly the path literally skipped over our house.
I can only imagine how the Israelites must have felt on the night of passover. In their camps not even a dog barked, but wailing was heard over the hills, deep wailing, dark sadness.
God I pray we will listen, that our hearts will not be hardened by the distractions of this world. And I pray we will burn with desire to help others who do not know you, that they will see you as the God who loves them and desires a relationship with them. You are the God who wants everyone to choose life.
