  1. I find in interesting how different the maps are of the area from different people (I assume they’re scholars). Previously, I uploaded two maps and today I offer a third from the NIV Study Bible.  Map.  Of course they didn’t have theodolites like we have today, certainly no satellite imagery, so I shouldn’t be critical.

Simeon received a portion of Judah’s territory, “because Judah’s portion was more than they needed” (Joshua 19:9). Not sure why this is significant, but it is unique.

“When they had finished dividing the land into its allotted portions, the Israelites gave Joshua son of Nun an inheritance among them” (19:49). Joshua was not a warlord demanding his way, rather, he was a servant leader who waited until last to make a request for a city in the hills. Nice. Joshua, the leader and Eleazar, the priest — together they rested in the Promised Land, a job well done.

What insight to offer this morning? The reading through these chapters seems to simply document the division of the land. Interestingly, there are no disagreements among the people, no arrogant name calling or finger pointing. Joshua casts lots “in the presence of the Lord our God (18:6) and the people accept what is decided. Perhaps that is enough to learn for one day.
